First Night 2009 is our 33rd celebration of the arts and community in Boston.  Since 1976, this signature event has served our great city by gathering a truly diverse audience for a spectacular festival that inspires creativity as it kicks-off a new year filled with promise.

Once again, First Night is proud to present an amazing group of performers and visual artists who truly represent the richness of Boston’s cultural landscape.  Our celebration features longtime audience favorites like the interactive Fedex Family Festival, colossal ice sculptures, the Mardi Gras style Metro Grand Procession, and of course, two dazzling fireworks displays. Our community spirit is certainly best exemplified by the First Night Neighborhood Network, a year-round arts and education and outreach program that culminates on New Year’s Eve.  This year, more than 1,500 young people from 16 Boston neighborhoods participated with professional artists in hands-on creative workshops at community sites all around the city.  Their work is everywhere you look tonight – from the young composers being showcased at CityPlace, to the Chinese dancers on stage at the Hynes Convention Center, to the giant puppets featured in the Procession, and much more.  Boston’s kids are at the heart of First Night!
